In her column for CNBCTV18, journalist Deepali Nandwani explores the world of Europe’s largest manufacturer of silver cutlery, Robbe & Berking, and their gateway to India, SR Artefacts. Thanks to the recent partnership with the Indian luxury silverware brand and in view of their exclusive showroom in Mumbai – where clients drop in only by appointment – Robbe & Berking will have access to a wide network of clients. According to SR Artefacts’ managing director Prashant Sarawgi “this is the kind of ambience and service you need for a brand such as Robbe & Berking, which has a strong bespoke component.” [CNBCTV18]
Why India? And why now?
The German luxury brand was established by master silversmith Nicolaus Christoph Robbe in Flensburg – the most northern part of Germany – in 1874. Ever since, the by now fith-generation family business, meanwhile counting over 170 employees, values tradition: Still, over 40 steps are needed to manufacture a fully handmade single piece of cutlery. This exceptional craftmanship, as expected, comes at a price. All the better that the economic slowdown in India has seemingly not affected luxury businesses:
“India has a long history of luxury, particularly amongst the royalty, and then the Indian elite who buy Robbe & Berking in Europe. So there could not have been a better time to debut in the country.”
